Netbook is a really good purchase when you're travelling. It's really light it has everything you need in 1 thing. I'd recommend it to everyone!

Pros
-Quiet
-Small, very portable, lightweight, goes and fits anywhere (yes, even in a cargo pocket. I've tried.)
-Windows media player 9
-Starts up quickly, ~30 s
-Small keyboard

Cons
-Does not come with Microsoft Office, comes with Microsoft Works (an oxymoron)
-Keys occasionally stick, random double letters. Be sure to proofread.
-No disc drive (but, there's no space for one, either)

My Eee PC is very fast; it only takes 30-40 seconds to boot up and about 15 seconds to shut down.
It's very small and light. You can take this thing anywhere. I have to add that, as a consequence of being less than 9 inches wide, this computer has a small keyboard. The width of just the letters on my desktop's full size split keyboard at the narrowest point is about a foot. Of course the keyboard on my 9 inch Eee PC is small. I like it this way. Invariably, when I sit down to write a paper at a desktop in the winter, my hands get cold. But on this mini-computer, my fingers are close together and warmed by the computer itself. After I had been using this wonderful computer for three days, the desktop computer seemed like an oversized monster. Everything was huge. I feel that I've adjusted very well to the small size of this computer. On the note of the keyboard, however, I feel I should note that some keys on the keyboard seem to stick slightly. This causes random double letters, though I should point out that this may be due to operator error (though, the double letters are usually A's or E's. Makes me want to comment about the extra E's: this computer is very enthusiastic about its name).
Reviewers have commented that battery life on this computer is only around 3 hours, but they don't say how much they're doing when they use the computer. I'd like to point out that the battery is advertised to last UP TO 5 hours. Turn off the music, disable the internet, stop multitasking, and turn the brightness down a little. These changes allow me to get nearly 5 hours of battery time. I'd like to point out that the battery does charge very quickly. While I was writing a paper, the battery charged 80% in about an hour. Granted, I had the brightness down, the internet disabled, and I was using my iPod, not the laptop, to play music.
I think there are two ways that this machine could be improved: 1. A bent or split keyboard. This change, however, would make the computer larger and more expensive, which would detract from its appeal. 2. Microsoft Office. All other computers I use have Microsoft Office. Sure, Microsoft Works has some nifty features, but every time I save a file, I have to save it as a different type of file so another computer can read it.

The rest of this review is written after a year of use.

I still love this thing. I have installed Microsoft Office, thus removing my biggest complaint. I also bought an external disc drive, which turns out to be bigger than my Eee PC. I love that this computer came with Microsoft XP, not Vista, though Vista was the newest OS. This computer has been filled with music, movies, and the word and excel files that every student makes. Filling up so much of its memory has slowed it down slightly, but not much. It's still faster than the old desktop. I haven't tested the battery life in a long time and have no reason to do so, but it hasn't died when I needed it to keep going. This computer is perfect for me. Except for a few months (when the computer forgot it had wireless), I've only ever had trouble accessing a wireless internet network in Japan. For a while, this wonderful computer wasn't accessing WiFi networks. That was my fault. Note: disconnect the internet, as disabling it will make the computer forget it can access wireless internet. This computer still boots up in about 40 seconds (including the time it takes for itunes to open, as it's programmed to do automatically), and still shuts off in about 15 seconds.

There are only two things wrong with it now: the random double letters, and I had to install a program to let me type in Japanese. However, me moving to Japan is not Asus's problem.

I should probably note that I am not a computer gamer. I can't tell you how this computer handles games more complex than solitaire.

I didn't give the cover time to gather fingerprints. I got one of the decal stickers, which arrived before the computer. A blue picture of the sun merely helps this mini laptop get attention.

I purchased this to use as a HTPC. I Installed Windows Media Center (2005 - not Vista) and it installed without any problems. I have read about how the PC slows down when any anti-virus is installed -but, so far I have tried 2 - Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Security Essentials - have NOT noticed any performance degradation. For playing media files - I have K-lite codecs installed and all the movies/music plays nicely without any buffering. I have not tried 1080p video yet - but, 720p videos plays nicely without hogging the CPU. So far it has 'hung' few times - but that might be problems with Windows MCE rather than the h/w. The only time I see it a bit sluggish is - when it tries to show the thumbnails of the videos and musics files/folders - takes a while to show all the thumbnails if there are a lot of files. The 5.1 channel audio also plays nice in my Onkyo Receiver.
Overall - happy with the PC and can't beat the price.

Every Day Computer
Perfect computer for everyday use with small footprint and minimal energy consumption. I can leave it on while it downloads all my media. I now own two of these and though it is not a high performance PC I can do all the tasks I want to do such as web browsing, email, and document creation. It is also powerful enough for my multimedia needs such as movie watching, picture viewing and playing my music. I sync my iPhone with iTunes as well as convert video files. I am more than happy with my Asus EEE PCs. I would not use this computer to play Grand Theft Auto or other system resource demanding games.

Excellent price and performance
I am very pleased with the ease of setup and the overall performance. This is not a pc for hd video editing, but it is a great pc for use on the web, creating word documents etc. The pc has a good keyboard and a good mouse, neither is wireless. All you need is a monitor. I bought an Acer ~ 15 inch display (Acer X163Wb - LCD display - TFT - 15.6" - widescreen - 1366 x 768 black) for less than 0 at Walmart. Attached the pc to the display and now have a small pc for the kitchen. The pc comes with wireless N with small antena that attaches to the pc. It does not have cd or dvd drive (or a floppy) which is fine as it quickly attaches to your other pc's or servers on your network. All the software is preloaded including a trial for MS Office for the home.

What a deal!
First let me say, Amazon is great. It only took two weeks to be delivered! And that is with overnight shipping! Crazy fast!

I got in on this supercomputer when it was only 6,414.89. That is a monster deal. It is only 0 and something right now, that is a sucker's price. Who will know you bought a supercomputer if you only paid like 0? Plus it runs better when you pay more.

The atom processor is great. I can't even see it cuz it's an atom! It runs so fast and once I swear it split.. and when it did it encoded a 3 hour 1080P video in 3ms! Yes, that is milliseconds! I heart atoms. Don't believe me? Well, how much did you pay for this supercomputer? If you only paid 0, you don't get these features. See what you get when you pay 6,414.89?

The only I don't is why this isn't pre-loaded with unix of XP. I mean, shouldn't you run a supercomputer OS?

Great App. for Asus EeeBox
I have placed this device at my dental office to run the patient check-in Kiosk on my Eaglesoft practice management software. It is definitely more than adequate and a great inexpensive solution.

Easy to hook up, tiny, and fast enough for the usual tasks - browsing, running Outlook Express, word processing and the like. I like the less-than-25W power consumption. It's very quiet, and did I mention how SMALL it is?

The much talked-about "Express Gate" boot up feature doesn't seem very worthwhile to me, but it might be to someone else. Booting into XP with this box is not much slower.

I don't think this machine will run demanding games, and with 1G of memory it won't do fifteen things at once. But if you need the basics, 160G of space, and don't want to weep over your electric bill if it gets left on overnight, then this is a great choice.

And it's not running Vista. That's a selling point.

Addendum: Now I have 2 - my wife continues to use the first one happily, and the second is my print, music, and home automation server. I rarely say this about Microsoft, and maybe Asus gets some of the credit, but this machine was a dream to set up. I plugged in all my USB devices (and these are many), the ethernet connector, the line out, and turned on the power. It came up, recognized everything, asked a few questions... and worked. No muss. Well thought, well designed, sub-par on-line performance
As much as I regret it, I have no choice but to return this machine because of its unacceptable online performance. But, let me first provide a brief account of my experience with the EeeBox... Desktop PC.

Setup:
------
Very easy. The machine comes in a nice little box that hosts its body, the USB keyboard, USB mouse, desktop stand, mounting bracket if it is to be attached to a monitor, Wi-Fi antenna, DVI to VGA adapter, power adapter, manuals, disks, etc. Everything is very tightly and securely packed.

For the physical setup you may need a flat and a Phillips screwdriver if the PC is to be mounted on the back of a monitor. I didn't even notice until the Asus came that certain monitors allow for the installation of a mounting bracket on their back - apparently this is a standard - and the little Asus can be made to sit there - 4 screws to attach the bracket to the monitor and the bracket itself has ONE thumb screw that's sufficient to attach the PC's body to it.

There is only a DVI interface for the video but the supplied DVI-VGA adapter takes care of those monitors that do not support DVI.

The Wi-Fi antenna is easily attached (screwed in) to the body. To my surprise, my white box came with a black antenna but, since I decided to keep it hanging on the back of the monitor, the color mismatch did not bother me.

Once the keyboard and mouse are plugged in and the machine is powered up Windows XP installs itself. It's as easy as providing the user's name.

The manual explains exactly how to set up the Wi-Fi and/or the wired network connection.

The entire setup, physical and software can be completed in less than one hour and it presents no major challenges.

A BIG plus about the setup is that practically there is ZERO bloatware. No AOL, Norton Whatever or software that's set to expire in 30 days appears to be running. In fact, the only thing that you see on the desktop, once the XP installs is the Explorer icon, the trash can and, I believe, the Adobe reader.

Features and performance:

On the PC's sides there are 4 USB ports of which 2 are taken by the keyboard and the mouse, an Ethernet port, DVI port and, I believe, a media card slot - didn't check exactly which standards are supported.

The optical mouse, while small, appears to be working well. The small keyboard is not 'typist quality' but it's usable. Of course, keyboards and mice are easy to replace.

The machine, as expected, is very quiet and it stays cool while running.

There are no speakers but audio in and out ports are present to allow for headphones/speakers and a microphone or some other audio source.

There is no CD/DVD/BD drive but one could be easily attached via the USB.

As far as running installed sapplications, performance appears to be good. However, any application that involved an on-line component had trouble running. My Wi-Fi router is providing for several computers, a PS3, an online printer and a PSP prior to EeeBox's arrival and performance was always adequate for each unit. The EeeBox, while properly configured - and the Wi-Fi monitor did show near-100% signal strength - was barely communicating with the outside world. It was consistently slow while its other fellow machines on the network were as happy and as fast as ever. It took me a couple of hours and several tries simply to install Google's Chrome browser. The Asus 'upgrades' site seemed to take its time to the extent that, several hours later, a 10MB upgrade received about one third of the data over HTTP and FTP failed altogether. The Adobe Flash player installed itself in about 20 minutes that that's how long it took for a Java update. Amazon's site was slow and so were Yahoo, CNN, Google News. All of the above was within the context of other of our computers whizzing along without any problems whatsoever. I did not test a 'wired' connection.

Conclusion and recommendation:

When ordering this machine I was aware of its lacking a CD/DVD drive and speakers and its CPU, graphics and memory limitations and I accepted those limitations. But, as I stated from the beginning, I am returning it because of its unacceptably poor online performance over Wi-Fi. It is possible that there was something not quite right with this particular box so everyone should be aware that I am evaluating ONE specific machine here, the one that I received.

It is possible that the performance is better over a wired connection but I did not test that.

Had this machine performed better online, it would have been an easy 5-stars for design, ease of setup and functionality.

After owning this netbook for half a year now, I can confidently say this is a quality, sturdy laptop. It's been tossed, dropped, and thrown up on, and yet it operates fine and without a glitch or scratch.

I guess part of the reason so much has happened is that it's small and easy to carry around, and as a student I use it outside a lot. One day I came home holding groceries in one hand, and the netbook and a textbook in the other. Mistaking it for my textbook due to their equally small size, I carelessly tossed the netbook onto to the floor. It wasn't until I saw a flash of pink flying through the air that I realized I had made a horrible mistake. Thankfully there wasn't even a scratch because the floor was carpeted. Another time, it fell off my table when I tripped on the power cord (okay, maybe I'm just clumsy), there was a nasty, flap sound of spat. Once again the laptop survived; all that came of it was that the keyboard was cleaned as all the debris fell out.

What really impressed me was the last incident, when a drunk friend threw up all over it. And I don't mean some of her vomit splashed onto the netbook, I mean she had it in her lap when she threw up and the poor thing got a full dousing. The USB drives, etc were filled, and the keyboard was just nasty... After thoroughly sanitizing it with Lysol and rubbing alcohol 6-7 times, and airing it out over night, it is once again good as new. Miraculously I think. Although a long time will pass before I can get over the fact that she threw up all over it...

Stories aside, I love everything about it. It took me a week to get used to its keyboard though, so the tiny right shift key doesn't bother me anymore. The touchpad is centered to the laptop, not the keyboard. It used to get annoying when I type because I would accidentally touch it. To fix this, I cut out a strip of screen protector and aligned it to the right corner of the touch pad. I wish I can post a picture to show everyone what it looks like. But anyway, it hasn't bothered me since.

I bought this computer almost a year ago intending it to be merely a secondary advice for school work and Japanese language study. I had read many reviews stating that netbooks can't handle much more than one thing at a time and frankly I have no idea what they are talking about. My 1000HE soon became my primary computer used for almost everything.

The key to this computer is learning how to maximize the limited hardware. If you want to doll it up with all sorts of bloatware and fancy but useless applications then yes it will be a very slow running machine. However, if you learn how to remove bloatware, turn off useless background services that 99% of users will never need, switch XP's to "adjust for best performance" mode, and use efficient programs for video playback/virus protection/etc, the 1000HE will do FAR more than stated in most reviews.

In fact as I type this review I am running multiple firefox tabs with a standard def youtube video playing AND an additional MP4 720p movie file playing in the background from hard drive at full screen. Yes you read that correctly. No overclocking, and simply running a 2GB ram stick. This was done by simply optimizing the out of the box system and installing efficient software (KMplayer with appropriate codecs for video play back BTW).

The 1000HE won't play full screen Flash HD (don't get this confused with HD video from your hard drive), it won't run many semi-modern games well, and you won't be doing any hardcore video/photo editing but for general use it is a wonderful machine for the price. Great battery life, a truly excellent screen (better than most laptops 2-3 times its prices except for the lower resolution), good keyboard, and good enough track pad.

Even though the 1000HE is older and probably higher priced than it should be compared to newer models I would say it should still be considered based on 1. The matte screen it uses. It is far superior in real world use when compared to just about any other netbook or laptop screen I've ever used. Most of the others Asus EEE's have switched to inferior gloss screens and 2. The 1000HE is very proven and very reliable. Asus in general is arguably the most reliable netbook/laptop manufacturer and the 1000HE seems to even be a standout among it's own brand peers in this regard.

Definately Love
Out of the box a greet product. Asus is always the name to look for when buying PC components. A fingerprint magnet though.

GREAT
Great for the value! Portable, easy to tote around in school and in airports. It takes a lot of abuse- i throw my laptop bag around a lot! Good programming is included but its still very basic. You'll need to purchase Word and etc.

Fantastic netbook
I got one of these a few months ago to go along with the 901 I have and the 1002ha my wife has. I think this is probably the best all around netbook I have seen. It's a little heavier than my other netbooks, but it's got a huge hard drive and tremendous battery life (it's not exactly 9.5 hours--get real!--but it is still a good 6.5-7 "real world" hours, which is amazing in itself). And it has really great wifi performance. It also has a slightly newer cpu, the Atom 280 as opposed to the Atom 270. Unfortunately, it's on the way out of production as Asus introduces its newer "seashell" design netbooks. But there are a few reasons to prefer these older models:

First, the newer models are not really any faster or more powerful.

And second, the new "seashell" case makes it a lot harder to make any modifications to the innards. On the 1000 series (including the 1000 and the 1000he, among others), replacing the ram and the hard disk is a simple matter of a few screws. Even a technical incompetent like myself can easily handle it.

One of the great features of this older generation of netbooks is that they are VERY user serviceable. This means that not only can you keep them going longer, but you can change them to suit your needs as they evolve.

Most people get netbooks for occasional use and for traveling (and they're GREAT for that). But everyone I know who has tried them, has eventually made them into their ONLY computer. That's what happened in my house. Unless you're an IT professional, and really need all the processing power of a modern desktop pc, you're probably like me and only need a computer for email, surfing, word processing, photo and music management. If so, your netbook will replace all your other computers.

Awesome little computer
I've had my Eee PC for about 6 months now and I love it. It's small and it lasts forever - I use it daily for lecture notes and its great for long plane trips as I can watch up to three movies without recharging it! Anyways - the main reason I wanted to write this review is to tell you just how DURABLE this computer is.

I ran it over with my car... and it still works fine.

I love my Eee PC.
