Evaluation and Testing in Nursing Education: Third Edition (Springer Series on the Teaching of Nursing)

This is an excellent textbook for practicing nurse educators and graduate students interested in the faculty role. It provides important information regarding measurement and evaluation of nursing students' performance in the classroom and clinical areas. With the current emphasis on outcomes of education, this text provides excellent guidance on a challenging topic. I strongly recommended it to master's students in a course that I teach on "teaching nursing" and will make it a required textbook in future semesters.

Leadership in Education: Organizational Theory for the Practitioner

Leadership in Education: Organizational Theory for the Practitioner

Product Description:
Marion writes in the preface, "Theories are little more than ivory tower artifacts if they cannot be translated into guides for actual leadership behavior." This idea permeates throughout Leadership in Education. Bridging the gap between the theoretical and the practical, Marion places organizational theory in broad historical and philosophical contexts to help readers see patterns in the material. Each major paradigm shift the field has undergone is examined in detail, along with the background shifts that accompanied them. All major organizational theories are covered: machine theory, human relations, structuralism, open systems, and finally anti-positivist theories. Each chapter opens with a list of objectives reflecting expected reader outcomes, as opposed to chapter intent. The objectives are implemented through discussion questions, suggested research topics, activities, and case studies. These items are embedded within each chapter rather than placed at the end, further facilitating a shift between the academic and the practical even within the book itself.

Education That Is Christian

Education That Is Christian

This book is a classic. It is one of the few textbooks that I kept from my undergraduate education. It also is one of the few books on Christian Education that I found useful as a missionary in Nigeria. I hope this book never goes out of print. When does the teaching method of Jesus go out of style?

EDUCATION THAT IS CHRISTIAN

LOIS E. LeBAR

Is there a distinctive Christian system of education?

Lois LeBar shows that there is such a system, and she defines it clearly.

"The foundations and the orientation of Christian education are distinctive if they are truly Christian," she says. "Every area of life that the Word of God enters is changed."

Her aim in this book is to help teachers discover the distinctive Christian system of education and to help Christians produce literature and visual aids from a Scriptural viewpoint.

In order to reach Scriptural conclusions, the reader is led through the process of studying the methods of the Teacher "come from God," the Old Testament wilderness school, the emphases of Paul's major sermons in Acts and of his epistles, the example of the life of David.

From these sources is derived the nature of the teaching-learning process, the relation of authority and creativity, the relation of the human and Divine teachers, and the implementation of these principles in structuring curriculum units and lessons.

Dr. LeBar emphasizes that intimate personal experience in the Lord should go together with Biblical facts and doctrine. Here is a book so overflowing with spiritual reality and power that it cannot help but bring new light and a life of transformed service to everyone who reads it.

LOIS E. LeBAR has been teaching Christian Education at Wheaton College since 1949, and she is now also director of the graduate program of Christian Education at Wheaton. She has had training in elementary and Christian education, and she has the B.A. degree in psychology from Roosevelt College, M.A. in Christian Education from Wheaton College, and the Ph.D. in religious education from New York University. She is author also of Children in the Bible School.

CHILDREN IN THE BIBLE SCHOOL

The HOW of Christian Education

LOIS E. LeBAR

Here is the comprehensive answer to the constant demand for a guide for teachers and parents interested in Christian education The spiritual, mental, emotional, social and physical development of the child is analyzed from the Nursery age through Beginner, Primary and Junior Departments. Solutions are offered to the problems of administration, integration of the Bible school into the church program, teacher qualifications, physical surroundings.

The section on teaching methods includes chapters on how children learn and grow, Scripture memorization, storytelling, visual aids, worship elements and special day services. The use of c lassie art, good hooks, songs and hymns, flannelgraphs, and drawing materials as aids to teaching younger pupils is thoroughly described and methods of guiding the child's natural instincts and desires for activity into proper channels are given in full detail, with accompanying diagrams.

An idealized view of case-based instruction at the Harvard Business School
Little has been written about case-based instruction and there is little relevant research. That makes this a useful book. Having attended the Harvard Business School when Christensen, the acknowledged master of case-based instruction, was active (although I was not lucky enough to be in one of his classes), I can say that the view of case-based instruction at HBS that one gets is very idealized, especially what is claimed about attention to individual students. Class sizes at HBS are about 90, so do the math. Not many students can be getting the attention that the anecdotes suggest. Nothing is said about the special issues that women and ethnic minority students may present for the instructor. Readers should remember that there really isn't any research evidence supporting the effectiveness of this instructional approach.

Product Description:
The development of students as “stewards of the discipline” should be the purpose of doctoral education.  A steward is a scholar in the fullest sense of the term—someone who can imaginatively generate new knowledge, critically conserve valuable and useful ideas, and responsibly transform those understandings through writing, teaching, and application. Stewardship also has an ethical and moral dimension; it is a role that transcends a collection of accomplishments and skills. A steward is someone to whom the vigor, quality, and integrity of the field can be entrusted. The most important period of a steward’s formation occurs during formal doctoral education.

Envisioning the Future of Doctoral Education is a collection of essays commissioned for the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate. The question posed to the essayists in this volume was, “If you could start de novo, what would be the best way to structure doctoral education in your field to prepare stewards of the discipline?” The authors of the essays are respected thinkers, researchers, and scholars who are experienced with and thoughtful about doctoral education.

Education for Extinction: American Indians and the Boarding School Experience 1875-1928

Posted on March 30th, 2009 in Education Textbooks Reviews | 2 Comments »

This all too true account of the reeducation process which American government officials euphemistically had Indian children go through is very chilling. It is maddening to believe there were people in Washington who actually considered such treatment of kids to be 'good policy'.

While reading through this book, I was gennuinely driven to tears. The tactics which were used on the kids were what was 'savage'. Ethnocentrism and racism kept the United States government and its representatives from seeing the Indians as a civilized and advanced society.

The primary and secondary sources which David Wallace Adams cites emphasize that the 'pupils' were not naive and passive victims of these abuses. Predating the American Indian Movement of the 1960's and 1970's, they resisted the 'education' which these schools were trying to shove down their own throats.

Education for Extinction: American Indians and the Boarding School Experience 1875-1928

Product Description:
The last "Indian War" was fought against Native American children in the dormitories and classrooms of government boarding schools. Only by removing Indian children from their homes for extended periods of time, policymakers reasoned, could white "civilization" take root while childhood memories of "savagism" gradually faded to the point of extinction. In the words of one official: "Kill the Indian and save the man."

Education for Extinction offers the first comprehensive account of this dispiriting effort. Much more than a study of federal Indian policy, this book vividly details the day-to-day experiences of Indian youth living in a "total institution" designed to reconstruct them both psychologically and culturally. The assault on identity came in many forms: the shearing off of braids, the assignment of new names, uniformed drill routines, humiliating punishments, relentless attacks on native religious beliefs, patriotic indoctrinations, suppression of tribal languages, Victorian gender rituals, football contests, and industrial training.

Especially poignant is Adams's description of the ways in which students resisted or accommodated themselves to forced assimilation. Many converted to varying degrees, but others plotted escapes, committed arson, and devised ingenious strategies of passive resistance. Adams also argues that many of those who seemingly cooperated with the system were more than passive players in this drama, that the response of accommodation was not synonymous with cultural surrender. This is especially apparent in his analysis of students who returned to the reservation. He reveals the various ways in which graduates struggled to make sense of their lives and selectively drew upon their school experience in negotiating personal and tribal survival in a world increasingly dominated by white men.

The discussion comes full circle when Adams reviews the government's gradual retreat from the assimilationist vision. Partly because of persistent student resistence, but also partly because of a complex and sometimes contradictory set of progressive, humanitarian, and racist motivations, policymakers did eventually come to view boarding schools less enthusiastically.

Based upon extensive use of government archives, Indian and teacher autobiographies, and school newspapers, Adams's moving account is essential reading for scholars and general readers alike interested in Western history, Native American studies, American race relations, education history, and multiculturalism.

A Special Education: One Family's Journey Through the Maze of Learning Disabilities

A Special Education: One Family\'s Journey Through the Maze of Learning Disabilities

As the mother of a 10 year old with learning differences -- and yes, that IS what we refer to them as in 2007 -- I felt as if I was reading my own story. Denial. Fear. A drive to *cure* my child, who cannot be cured. Sometimes describing him to others in terms of his disabilities, instead of as the incredible, talented person that he is. Buchman doesn't have any answers; there ARE NO ANSWERS. But it is tremendously helpful to read about her feelings and her journey, to know that we're not alone.

Some comments have criticized Ms. Buchman for using her considerable financial resources to help her child, or have indicated that her story cannot be universalized because of her wealth. That's simply not true. Buchman points out that she had her daughter evaluated by the NYC Dep't of Education, and that she was receiving resources from them. In fact, Charlotte's high school, Churchill, accepts DOE funding, and I believe that a substantial percentage of its students are placed there with tuition paid by the DOE. The LiPS program that Charlotte took in California is also now available throughout the world. Finally, one poster criticized Buchman for not insisting that her daughter be mainstreamed. While my son is mainstreamed, its not one size fits all. Most of the parents I know who have children with more extreme learning differences, like Charlotte, prefer a special school, where all of the teachers know about learning differences, and are specially trained to deal with them.

Product Description:
Designer Dana Buchman's chronicle of her daughter's struggle with learning disabilities and of her own journey to become the mother Charlotte needs her to be.

The celebrated designer Dana Buchman knew almost nothing about "learning differences" when her daughter, Charlotte, was diagnosed with disabilities as a toddler. She soon discovered that the hard work and determination that had taken her from the Ivy League to her own fashion label wouldn't be enough to deal with Charlotte's disabilities; she would have to acquire a new skill set--to be able to see Charlotte as a person with unique abilities.

A moving mother-daughter story, A Special Education is an inspiring account of one mother's journey to acceptance and understanding, as well as a family's triumph over daunting circumstances.

A "Sense of Not Alone"
This book came to me right at the right time. Dana Buchman's honest narrative about denial and the pain that she had to overcome to really begin to help not only her daughter but herself and the rest of her family was something that resonated with me. It is a tough struggle at best when you have a LD child but to have three and have them be each with their own unique set of problems is more than just a notion. As she discusses how new changes occur as your child moves through school and grows in age, it helped me to see that they were simply that, changes not more problems. This book gave me comfort and has given me some new direction as well.

A Special Education: One Family's Journey Through the Maze of Learning Disabilities
I did not really enjoy this book. This book was assigned for a graduate class I was taking. The book was about Dana, the mother, for the most part. The daughter, who has learning differences only gave her view in one chapter.

Pretty much, this family is a high-society New York family with many resources available because of their wealth. Most certainly, the average family would not find the resources that they had available for their daughter.

A Special Education
Having a child with special needs, it was comforting to read a memoir of what another has gone through dealing with this situation; the ups, the downs, the good, the sad. Also loved the last chapter. It is written by her daughter. That was very moving. When I finished the book I was encouraged for the future!
