Law and Special Education, The (2nd Edition)

Posted on January 31st, 2009 in Education Textbooks Reviews | 2 Comments »

This book is useful for those in both the education and the legal field (although law students and those in the legal profession might want to skip over the early law information - like the difference between case, statutory, and regulatory law - because you'll already be well-versed in that). Special educators, school counselors, and administrators need this book in their professional libraries; I wouldn't recommend it to general educators, though, because it's probably to dense for their purposes. The book is broken down, by chapter, as follows:
1) Intro to the American Legal System
2) Legal Research (which includes how to cite and find laws)
3) Legal Research on the Internet
4) The History of Law and Children With Disabilities
5) The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
6) Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
7) The Americans with Disabilities Act
8) The No Child Left Behind Act
9) Free Appropriate Public Education
10) Identification, Assessment, and Evaluation
11) The Individualized Education Program
12) Least Restrictive Environment
13) Procedural Safeguards
14) Disciplining Students with Disabilities
15) Additional Issues
Appendix A) Major Changes of IDEA 2004
Appendix B) Relevant Sections of the U.S. Constitution

My favorite feature of the book, though, isn't found in the pages. I love that it has a website that corresponds to the text. This is crucial because laws (especially case law, but also statutory and regulatory laws) change often, which has doomed many books in this field that become outdated shortly after publication. The website provides updates and additional resources (like powerpoints for each chapter that provide useful reviews of the content) to keep the book fresh.

The Law and Special Education: Includes the IDEA Improvement Act

Product Description:
The second edition of one of the top special education law books in the field acquaints readers with the legal development and current legal requirements of special education.  The book includes new information on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 and the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.  Special Education K-12 Teachers and Administrators.

Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education

Posted on January 31st, 2009 in Education Textbooks Reviews | 2 Comments »

After Jo Ann Brewer's superb INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION textbook, I would get this resource to keep me up-to-date on the foundational knowledge that stands as essential for early childhood professionals. Even though it lacks a chapter exclusively devoted to the all-important role of play in early childhood education, the absence of such a discussion leaves the learner with a more neutral reference point from which to decide his position on whether or not to align with a play-based curricular philosophy

Morrison presents a starkly realistic and contemporary overview of the field with an outstandingly streamlined overview of Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development (where he keeps a keen and faithful eye on expressing the ideas from Piaget/Inhelder's THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE CHILD).

After getting the Brewer text and Morrison, you should need no other book of this type. Please try Feeney, Christensen, & Moravcik's WHO AM I IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN if you need one more excellent text.

Foundations of American Education (6th Edition)

As far as the item that I got is concerned it is everything that I wanted. What frustrates me is the time it took to get it. It came on the last possible day of the supposed shipping time, which happens to be over a month from the time I actually ordered it. Waiting a month to get a textbook for a class is not helpful!

Good Packaging
This book came in a timely manner and was shipped very well. It is a softcover book, and it came wrapped to a cardboard backing that did not allow the book to be bent, which was very nice.

TEL 505 book
It's a pretty good book for a textbook. Focuses on the historical data and analysis of how American Education came to be as it is today; from it's roots as small unorganized Quaker schools in the new world.

Great Teachers Guide
The book is a continuous source of information for any teacher, or adult that just wants to get a start on the education system. Unfortunately, the real classrooms are not even close, as projected in the textbook. Where did our education in the schools go?

I can not find any evidence of this being a used book. The quality is like new and I received it before another book that I paid to have expedited. I guess I wasted my money on expedited shipping.

Continued Excellence At A Great Bargin
Very few series are as invaluable as McGraw Hill's Annual Editions series because a college professor has a curriculum for a seminar class within one volume. The 2008-2009 early childhood offering continues the same excellence in article choices.

Out of the articles, I recommend three of particular note: Ede's article on "The Scripted Curriculum," Baum/McMurray-Schwarz's article on reading early childhood research, and Stipek's accountability in preschool. I believe you will start reading these articles in one mode of mind and will finish them with a changed outlook in some shape or form.

Please get this book for teaching your course or for personal enrichment at the least.

This book has everything from parent involvement to parent teacher conferencing to the very best history of parent education/involvement that I have EVER seen.

If you can't find any book by Kevin Swick, then get this one. Heck! Get 'em both! You can never do with enough ways to get parents involved with children during the early years.

The textbook arrived three business days after I ordered it. The review said that the book was used and that it looked almost 'like new.' When the text arrived, I was very pleasantly surprised with it's condition. My classmates and I could not tell any difference between their new books and my 'used' one. I will definetly be ordering more texts from this site!

Excellent comprehensive resource
The scope of material covered in this text is impressive. I used this text in a class that Dr. Morrison taught in 2008. The vingettes he includes really show how to bring theory to practice. This text was helpful to me in preparing for state teaching certification, and is one that I continually reference in the field.

Assessment: In Special and Inclusive Education

With all the resource books available, this is one I will keep. The reading is practical and to the point. The information is well presented giving you a good foundation in assessment. Also it is a good resource for those of you who are planning to take their CST-children with disabilities exam.
And the best thing was the price, I paid well below the asking price at my school and at Barnes and Noble. I purchased a used copy that was in excellent condition! Thanks!

It provides future special educators comprehensive coverage of the latest tests and evaluation procedures for all areas of exceptionality – for every age group – for students with mild, moderate, and severe disabilities.

  • New chapter on Response to Intervention (RTI) makes readers aware of the increased importance of multi-tiered assessment in today’s classrooms (see Chapter 17).

  • New information on the various types of speech and language disorders often seen by teachers of Special Education (see Chapter 13).

Necessary book
This is a book I had to have as a SPED teacher. My original with all my notes blew out of a box as we were moving, but I needed it to help with assessments as a teacher. This is a tough subject, but the book explains everything well.

Financing Education in a Climax of Change
So far this has been an easy read book and everything that I have been assigned to read and respond on has been in this book! Great Job!

A little disappointed

My book arrived with a small rip on the outside cover near the binding, and I tried to take a picture, but it would not show up good enough for viewing. Also, I thought the book was new and expected the binding to be tighter, but the front cover flopped open wide. Overall, the book is in good shape, I was just a little disappointed.
